Coney Island Branch Brooklyn Public Library

Coney Island Branch Brooklyn Public Library

Brooklyn, NY
Expected Completion 2021

In 2012, the Coney Island branch of the NYPL was devastated by Hurricane Sandy, which inundated the neighborhood and left it isolated and without utilities for weeks. In the two years following the storm, FEMA funding enabled the library to repair the extensive water damage incurred on the ground floor and basement of the 1956 building. In 2016, BFA was engaged through NYC-DDC to renovate the second floor. The main objectives of the project were to create a flexible, well-appointed new community room for classes, lectures, readings, and other programmed events; update the facility for the digital age; and to support the expanding role that New York City’s libraries play in its communities.
