  • Grand Concourse Branch, New York Public Library

BFA is renovating the interior of a 1956 New York Public Library (NYPL) branch in the Bronx, New York, making it more attractive, accessible, and functional for the digital age. The original structure is organized around a dramatic open stair accessing multiple split-level reading rooms, with only a small service elevator in the back-of-house staff zone. BFA replaced this lift with an ADA-compliant elevator and reconfigured circulation on each floor to gain public access. The newly-accessible top floor has been redesigned to create a spacious, flexible community room that will be a welcoming gathering space for classes, lectures, readings, and other programmed events. The refurbished lobby area includes a new handicapped-accessible bathroom. Completed 2021.
